How to Care for Your New Tattoo
A 30-day step-by-step aftercare guide. Everything you need to know for proper healing and decades of vibrant ink.
The First 24 Hours — Critical
This window decides 80% of your final result. Do these:
- Keep the wrap on: Saniderm/film bandage stays 4–6 hours minimum
- First wash: Lukewarm water + pH-neutral fragrance-free soap, 5–10 sec
- Pat dry: Clean paper towel, never rub
- Thin layer: Tattoo balm or unscented Bepanthen
- Avoid: Tight clothing, sweating, alcohol, sun exposure
Days 2–7 — The Itch Phase
Light scabbing and tightness are normal. Continue:
- Wash 2–3× daily with the same gentle soap
- Thin layer of tattoo balm 3–5× daily
- Never scratch or peel scabs — let them fall naturally
- No swimming, no hot baths, no saunas, no gym
- Sleep on fresh sheets, on the opposite side
Days 8–14 — Surface Heal
The "milky scab" phase. Your tattoo may look cloudy or faded — this is normal new skin forming. Keep moisturizing with unscented lotion. Avoid direct sunlight; if outdoors, cover with loose clothing (no SPF on healing skin yet).
Days 15–30 — Final Settle
Most surface healing is complete. The tattoo regains its sharpness as new skin matures. Now you can:
- Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen on the tattoo when outdoors
- Resume normal exercise and swimming
- Schedule any touch-up sessions (4–6 weeks post-tattoo)
Long-Term Care (4+ Months)
Full skin regeneration completes around month 4. For lifetime vibrancy:
- Daily moisturizer — keeps ink crisp
- SPF 50 every day — UV is the #1 enemy of color
- Hydration — drink water, eat well
- Touch-ups every 8–12 years for fine lines
Red Flags — Call Your Artist or Doctor
- Severe pain that worsens after day 3
- Yellow/green discharge or strong odor
- Fever, expanding redness, hot skin
- Hard lumps or persistent swelling after day 7
- Allergic rash or hives near the tattoo
