Different bandage types serve different healing approaches. Here's what each does and removal timing.

Types of Tattoo Bandages

Saniderm/Tegaderm film: transparent breathable film, stays 24h-5 days. Plastic wrap (kling film): traditional method, change daily. Gauze/medical tape: more porous, change every few hours. Foam dressings: for special cases.

Saniderm/Tegaderm (Recommended)

Apply directly after tattoo. Plasma accumulates underneath (normal). Stays on 2-5 days depending on tattoo. Remove gently in hot shower (water relaxes adhesion). Reduces healing time by 30-50%.

Plastic Wrap (Traditional)

Wear 2-4 hours after session. Remove and wash gently. Don't reuse — apply fresh wrap nightly for first 2-3 nights only. After day 3, no bandages — let skin breathe.

When to Remove

Saniderm: 24h minimum (up to 5 days). Plastic wrap: 2-4 hours initial. Gauze: change every 2-3 hours during day. Foam: as instructed by artist.

Removing Saniderm Properly

Get in hot shower — water softens adhesive. Slowly peel from corner, don't rip. Pull parallel to skin, not perpendicular. Wash gently with mild soap. Pat dry, apply thin moisturizer. Watch for irritation around the edges (allergic reaction is rare but possible).

Common Mistakes

Removing too early (skin still healing). Leaving Saniderm too long (potential breakdown). Using regular tape (skin irritation). Reapplying same Saniderm after removal. Sleeping in plastic wrap longer than intended (creates moisture trap).
