Skin conditions complicate tattoos. Here's when to consult, when to wait, and when to avoid.
Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis
During flare-ups: AVOID tattoos. Stable conditions: tattoos possible with caution. Risks: increased irritation, slower healing, possible reaction to inks. Consult dermatologist before booking.
Psoriasis
Active psoriasis on tattoo area: NO tattoos. Active psoriasis elsewhere: tattoo possible on clear skin. Risk: Koebner phenomenon (psoriasis triggered at tattoo site). Some inks specifically problematic for psoriatic skin.
Vitiligo
Possible but tricky. Pigment migration may occur. Some artists specialize in vitiligo tattooing for camouflage. Otherwise: design considerations for distinct color contrast issues.
Acne (Active)
Don't tattoo over active acne. Risk: spreading bacteria, scarring, ink retention issues, healing complications. Treat first, wait 6-8 weeks after clear skin.
Sensitive Skin (No Diagnosis)
Often safe with precautions: hypoallergenic ink, slower work pace, smaller test area first, gentle aftercare protocol, monitor closely first 48 hours.
When to See Doctor First
Before booking, consult dermatologist if: history of bad skin reactions, current medication for skin condition, autoimmune conditions, blood disorders, history of severe allergies. Bring artist's ink list to dermatologist for review.
