A complete week-by-week timeline of how your tattoo heals from day 1 to month 4.
Week 1 (Days 1-7): Fresh Wound
Day 1: Bandage on, mild ooze. Day 2-3: Initial scab formation begins. Day 4-7: Beginning peel/flake. Care: keep clean, moisturize, no submersion. Symptoms: redness, mild swelling, slight ooze.
Week 2 (Days 8-14): Heavy Peel
Most challenging phase. Heavy itching, light scabbing, dry flaking. Care: continue gentle moisturizer, no scratching, keep skin supple. Looks: tattoo may appear "milky" or cloudy.
Week 3 (Days 15-21): Surface Heal
Peeling decreases dramatically. New skin is forming. Tattoo regains some sharpness. Care: regular moisturizer, increase to SPF 50+ when healed. Activities: most normal activities resume.
Week 4 (Days 22-30): Settle
Surface fully healed. Final clarity emerges. Care: SPF daily, moisturizer daily. Activities: pool/sea OK, normal exercise OK, sleep on tattoo OK.
Month 2 (Days 31-60): Color Settles
True color and shade visible. Final touch-up assessment around day 45. Skin still in regeneration. Care: ongoing daily SPF + moisturizer.
Month 3-4: Full Maturity
Skin fully regenerated. Tattoo at peak vibrancy. Now is when most touch-ups happen if needed. Long-term care begins: daily SPF for life, hydration, healthy lifestyle.
Year 1+: Long-Term Care
Continue daily SPF and moisturizer. First touch-up assessment at month 4. Skin will gradually shift over decades. With proper care: 15-30 year lifespan before significant fading.
