Both substances dramatically slow tattoo recovery. Here's the science and what to avoid.

Smoking Effect (75% Slower Healing)

Nicotine: constricts blood vessels (less oxygen and nutrients to skin). Carbon monoxide: replaces oxygen in blood. Toxins: damage healing tissue. Reduced collagen production.

Smoking Recommendations

Quit completely or significantly reduce 3 days before, 14 days after tattoo. Healing time extends from 3-4 weeks to 6-8 weeks for smokers. Result: more visible scarring, faster fading, increased infection risk.

Alcohol Effect (Major Issues)

Alcohol: thins blood (excess bleeding), suppresses immune system (slower healing, more infection risk), dehydrates body (poor skin condition), impairs judgment (poor aftercare decisions).

Alcohol Restrictions

No alcohol 24 hours before tattoo session. No alcohol 24-72 hours after session minimum (longer for large pieces). After day 3-5, moderate alcohol with full hydration. Heavy drinking damages tattoos for the entire 4-month healing period.

Combined Effect

Smoking + drinking: 50-70% slower healing, doubled scarring risk, significantly faster color fade, much higher infection risk. We strongly recommend abstaining from both during healing.

Long-Term Smokers

Daily smoking permanently affects skin healing capacity. Long-term smokers have visibly faded tattoos within 5 years. Quitting (or reducing) extends tattoo lifespan significantly.
